ESSENTIAL FALL LAYERING TO LOOK INCREDIBLY STYLISH
Fall is menswear’s favorite season. In Summer and Spring, the weather is often too hot to wear multiple layers. In the Winter, most guys are bundled up to avoid the cold. Fall provides you the perfect temps to start busting out some stylish layers to add to your outfits. So naturally, we need to get you some layers.
Layering is the easiest way to inject some style into your outfits. You can easily dress up something like a plain tee with a jacket or an overshirt.
Today, we’ll go over a few fall layering essentials you should be looking to add to your wardrobe.
These are all items we’ve noticed we’ve been adding in to our personal styling clients’ shopping lists a lot, so you can use them too.
Layering is simple. Take a cool overshirt or jacket like any of the ones below and throw it over a plain, neutral crewneck tee. There are plenty of other ways to layer, but this is the simplest way to do it.
THE OVERSHIRT LAYER
The number one question I get here is how do you tell an overshirt from a regular button-down shirt? Typically, overshirts will be much thicker, and made from a hefty fabric like flannel or corduroy and feature twin pockets on the chest.
This is a more casual layer, and works best with things like a light wash pair of jeans. this one is from John Varvatos.
The Cardigan Layer
Something a bit more trendy this season is a heavier cardigan.
This works well with a pair of neutral cotton chinos, or corduroy or wool trousers. This one is from Billy Reid.
THE DENIM TRUCKER JACKET LAYER
I started Pivot Image Consulting nearly ten years ago. In that time, I’ve never seen a denim jacket go out of style. It’s bulletproof from a style perspective.
They typically don’t retain heat well, so they’re a perfect lightweight layer. Works well with 5 pocket pants in any another color than the jacket - you want to avoid a Canadian tux look. This one is from Paige.
THE CASUAL BLAZER LAYER
It’s rare to see someone in a full suit or even suit separates these days. Menswear has gone much more casual post-COVID. A perfect way to still elevate your look is going for a casual blazer.
Typically, you’ll want to look for patch pockets sewn to the outside of the jacket, a more natural-looking shoulder without all the padding, and some sort of texture to the fabric.
This one goes great with dark-wash jeans or any other 5-pocket pant. This one is from Rodd & Gunn.
THE HARRINGTON JACKET LAYER
A simple jacket with a zip front closure and a collar. This is another jacket that can basically go with any pair of trousers, but it's a bit more of a casual jacket, so looks best with jeans or chinos. This one is from Brooks Brothers.

The idea with all of these fall layers is that they’re easy to pair. Simply put them over a good white tee and choose the appropriate pants and you’re done.
Hope that helps get your fall wardrobe in check. More on fall style stuff in the coming emails in the next few weeks.
