HOW TO DRESS TO APPEAR LARGER OR SMALLER
If you know what you're doing, you can make your body size look much larger or smaller by knowing this one visual principle I'm going to share with you.
First, let's take a look at an image containing two orange circles encompassed by multiple other circles of varying sizes.
What's interesting here is that both of those orange circles are exactly the same size.
This is called The Ebbinghaus illusion, and it shows the power of proportion.
When a subject is surrounded by larger or smaller elements, the subject will appear inverse to the surrounding elements.
So, how do we use this in your style?
Easy.
If you're a bigger guy, surround yourself with big elements. If you're a smaller guy, surround yourself with smaller elements.
These elements could be almost anything: Patterns, jewelry, watches, ties, shirt collars, lapel width, belts, layering items, etc.
The goal is to use your wardrobe items to make you look smaller or larger relative to them.
Let's take a look at an example...
Do you see how Charles Barkley is wearing a tie, tie knot, collar spread, shoulder padding, and lapel width that are all on the side of slightly larger? This makes his bigger body and head look smaller and proportionate by contrast to those elements.
Now, use your imagination, and let's put him into this...
Pretty hilarious.
So, keep in mind your body shape goal - ask yourself if you want to have a larger or smaller presence, and then use your clothing to support that goal.
This is what we mean when we say "Turning Style Into Science". Every aspect of dressing well has nothing to do with what influencers proclaim is "in" or "out" - It has everything to do with how you dress YOUR body.

Hope that helps.
