DOES WEIGHT MATTER WHEN IT COMES TO MEN'S STYLE?

I'm about to tell you something controversial.

There are some universal truths we need to accept with clothing. Here's one some people might not like:

Nothing will make you look more stylish than losing weight.

Being overweight kills your style. Many of the gains you'll make from a wonderfully put together outfit will be offset. When you're overweight, clothing doesn't fit right.

Things poke out.

Things bunch.

Things bag.

Things sag.

My bodybuilder clients experience much the same thing. It's tough to find something that fit off the rack. I'm generally doing a lot of tailoring and custom made clothing for these guys.

Here's the deal: For bigger guys, clothing, unfortunately, doesn't fit as well as it could.

Before you get upset, realize that I'm writing this from a personal point of frustration. I have about 10 pounds I'd like to lose, and even that small amount frustrates me. Granted, I work in clothing, so I notice these things much more than the average person, but still.

If you're lean, you WILL look better in your clothing.

Lean guys get away with things bigger guys can't. Everything looks intentional when you're lean. You could wear something super slim, and it looks great, or you could wear an oversized baggy hoodie, and it looks great.

The slimmer clothing would accentuate your leanness, and the bulky clothing wouldn't bulk you out even more as it does with bigger guys.

A lean guy has a body built for clothing because the clothing drapes off him. Think of these guys as walking, talking clothing hangers. That's what most luxury fashion brands do - take a look at your average male runway model.

Being lean is why your favorite fashion influencers and style icons can wear a t-shirt and jeans, and kids freak out thinking it's the coolest thing they've ever seen.

Clothing can help you tremendously in making your body look better. In fact, it's the easiest way to do so. Think about putting on the right clothing vs. months of work in the gym. One gets you an instant result.

But, if you want to look really stylish, it's time to lose weight if you need to.

Until then, you have to think about how to look taller and leaner and put those things into practice (which you can learn here). A man with a lot of weight to lose can use clothing tricks and tactics to look better.

The thing is, I know all of these tricks, and while they help, they're never going to equate to what you could look like by losing weight, unfortunately…

So, to properly motivate you, here's what happens when you get leaner:

You can show more skin.

Leaner is sexier, and you can get away with showing more skin. This is a no brainer but opens up a lot of doors come spring/summer.

You'll need a lot less tailoring.

When dealing with a funky body type, you'll have to do a lot more tailoring for things to fit correctly. Generally, men buy a clothing item, say a shirt, that will accommodate one area (like a belly), but because of that, the shirt is too big and won't fit right in other areas and needs to be tailored.

Being lean will save you tons of money and time, not needing to tailor most of your items.

You'll be able to fit in more brands + spend less time shopping.

Clothing makers don't generally like guys on the poles of the body type scales. If you're very skinny or very large, your range of brands is limited.

Because clothing generally looks better on leaner guys, you'll have way more options. I need to avoid a ton of items with bigger guys, but a leaner guy can wear so many different options.

You can wear more fashion-forward clothing.

Most designer brands lean slim. Look at the models luxury brands use, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

If you want to wear more fashion-forward clothing, it helps if you're leaner. You'll look much better in it, as it's basically designed for you.

Your clothing won't bunch or bag in weird areas
.

Sometimes it's a weird underboob thing, sometimes the thighs are too big, sometimes it's a muffin top, sometimes it's all three and more. Whatever it is, you don't have to worry about the clothing looking funky on your body if there's no excess weight there to shape it in weird ways.

You'll look more stylish without trying.

Style icons can get away with wearing anything. When you're leaner, a t-shirt and jeans (provided they're good and fit right) become a cool outfit.

You won’t worry about dressing your body.

When you're lean, everything looks good, and getting dressed becomes a breeze. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you should be actively trying to wear clothing that helps your body look better. If you already have the body, you take that part out of the equation, making getting dressed much more comfortable.

If you haven't noticed by now, this article is doing nothing for my business. I'm not showing you how you need me to solve all your issues.

In fact, if a client needs to lose 35+ pounds, I won't work with them in-person until they've worked down near a weight they plan to maintain. What's the point?

I want to give men the change that is going to last. Paying for high-level expertise and a closet full of new clothing isn't a smart investment right now if we're going to need to redo it in 6 months.

At a base level, I'm not only a personal stylist but also an investment advisor. I tell you where to spend your money to get the best return (looking incredible) and how to do it. I have your best interest in mind.

So, if you need to lose weight, consider this your strong kick in the butt to do so.

This article isn't a pitch for me; this is a pitch for you. I wrote this because it's important. It's crucial for your health, but it's also vital for your appearance, in more ways than you might think.

I would imaging you've never thought about the excess weight causing you so many issues with your clothing, huh?

Yes, you can make it better with clothing (learn how here in this complimentary video training), and you should. But you need to actively be taking care of your body and leaning down if your ultimate goal is to be at the top of your style class.

You don't see or feel what you could look like, so it's hard to imagine it, but I promise it's worth it for the style factor alone.

Now, it's time to lose my own excess pounds I have to obliterate. There’s a lot of great clothing out there I want to wear.
