SHIRTS FOR MEN: TUCKED OR UNTUCKED?

I get a common question from guys: "How do I know when to tuck or untuck a shirt?"

It’s a great question, and there are a few telling signs that will let you know whether or not you should be tucking a shirt or keeping it untucked.

First, you’ll want to look at the length of the shirt. Any shirt you wear untucked should hit around mid-fly or above. If it’s longer than this, your legs will look shorter and squatty, and your torso will look too long, throwing your body out of proportion.

Second, look at the hem of the shirt. It should have a straighter hem towards the bottom rather than swooping, curving tails on the back and front of the shirt. Some shirts have tails that fall somewhere in the middle, but generally, the straighter the hem, the more likely it is that it should be tucked.

For some of my shorter guys, you’ll need something cut a specific way, as nearly all shirts will be too long for you. This is when you can visit a tailor to shorten the bottom of the shirt (around $30), make something custom, or visit stores that make shorter sizing (Ash & Erie and Peter Manning NYC are good starts).

Always think about whether a shirt should be tucked or untucked according to those two things when putting something on.
